Frequently Asked Questions.
CANVAS PRINTING
Some of our most frequently asked questions about printing fine art on canvas.
Do you apply a protective coating to the canvas?
Yes. All canvas prints will be coated with an aqueous coating to help diminish the potential for smudging and scuffing. A print in which the matte canvas is chosen will receive a matte coating. Concierge customers who have selected a luster or gloss canvas will receive a luster coating.
What kind of canvas do you use?
For canvas, we use primarily use poly-cotton blend canvases by Breathing Color specially coated to receive the inks used by our printers. The canvas has an oxford weave giving it a natural canvas texture, favored by professional photographers. Our Instant Order customer canvas option is available in a matte canvas. Various other options are available for Concierge customers.
Will my print ever fade?
Both Epson and Canon, the printer brands we use to print on canvas, promote their inks as archival-being resistant to fading over time. Our print partner has been producing canvas prints since 2001. Since that time they have had no one contact them regarding a faded print.
How long will my canvas print last?
Your giclee canvas print will last up to 150 years with the proper care. Although the process of giclee printing has only been around since the latter part of the last century, testing and research confirm that an archival giclee print can have a lifespan of 200+ years. Both Epson and Canon promote their inks as being resistant to fading over time.
Will my canvas print look like a painting?
When you choose oil painting effects for the digital remaster of your photo, it will have the appearance, when printed on canvas of an oil painting.
Do you use real wood for your stretched and mounted prints?
Yes. We use only sap-free lumber for our stretcher bars. Our preference is Kiln dried pine as it is not likely to crack, warp, or become brittle.
What is Giclee printing?
A giclee print is a way to classify a professionally produced print using inkjet technology, primarily printed on canvas or a fine art paper with archival grade inks. While the process is only several decades old, it has quickly become the method of choice for both artists and photographers.

Which paper is best for my artwork or photography?
Choosing the paper that best compliments your artwork or photography is how you should gauge which paper is best.
We have 17 different papers available for printing on Fine Art Paper. However, unless you are a professional photographer or artist who routinely prints fine art, offering you 17 different papers would be more than confusing. Hence, we have selected two out of the 17 high-quality papers for our Instant Order customers; Hahnemuhle Photo Rag and Watercolor Bright White. We have descriptions for both these papers on our Fine Art Paper Print page.
Our Concierge customers have access to all 17 because we work with a concierge customer throughout the entire process, which includes consulting on the print, any artist customization, interior design, etc. Most often one of the two papers shown above is the best choice, while at other times, a different paper may be the best choice.
There are four characteristics that affect how an image will appear on any of our varied fine art papers: ink absorption, brightness, texture, and gloss levels (if any). If you are unsure about your choice, you may email us with your question, or you may request a 30-minute consulting session.
How should I care for my fine art paper print?
To extend the lifespan, store your giclee fine art paper print out of direct sunlight and avoid extreme temperature changes or exposure to humidity. It is recommended that paper prints be framed behind glass or acrylic glazing when ultimately on display.
Why do some prints want to curl or not remain flat initially?
Since the majority of our customers are ordering single prints with the intent of framing and hanging, we recommend that you 1) select a finishing option for your paper print or 2) use our framing and matting option.
Unframed prints on some papers have more difficulty in flattening our than others. This is especially true during the cooler months but can happen during any time of the year. The papers the prints are produced on are printed on rolls then hand cut. In most cases, we will ship prints up to a certain size flat so that they have had time to lose their curl and flatten out, however, this is not a guarantee. Thicker or heavier-weight papers may still need more time to flatten out.
If you’re taking your unframed/unmounted print to a local framer, they will solve any curling problem when mounting the fine art paper print.
Do you apply a laminate or spray coating to my fine art paper prints?
In most cases, your print will not be coated and definitely not laminated. In some instances we may need to coat prints which have large expanses of dark colors in them such as solid black backgrounds. This is to help alleviate potential scuff marks that are visible within the print if not looking at it behind glass or a clear plastic sleeve.
Are these giclee prints?
Yes. The fine art paper prints are printed with a method we refer to as giclee printing. This is a technology that has evolved since the late 20th century to use primarily aqueous wide format printers with archival inks on archival media.
How well do photos print on fine art papers?
More and more fine art photographers are turning to giclee prints since in many cases photos look better and have a wider color gamut than you might normally experience with traditional photo prints. This was not always the case but advancements in inkjet technology over the past 10 years have allowed the right image with the right paper to offer a superior color gamut and better contrast and depth.
What is “Giclee Printing”?
A giclee print is a way to classify a professionally produced print using inkjet technology, primarily printed on canvas or a fine art paper with archival grade inks. While the process is only several decades old, it has quickly become the method of choice for both artists and photographers.
Can I paint over my fine art paper prints?
We do not recommend this. We cannot guarantee any paper print that has been embellished or had paint applied to it. Unlike canvas, many of the papers will wilt and warp like most papers when saturated with any sort of liquid base. While some customers have reported success with both acrylic and oil paints when embellishing their fine art paper prints others have reported negative results. If you think you want to try doing this you should consider ordering smaller prints to test and practice the technique that works best for you before attempting with a larger print. Most artists that attempt this will pre-coat their print with either a spray fixative or pray lacquer-based coating to seal the print first.
Will my print be ready to hang?
We offer many options for printing on Fine Art Paper. Currently, our Instant Order service has 4 mounting options. These options are for customers who plan to frame their artwork.

Your print cost is dependent upon a few factors: size, media type, number of copies, and style where applicable. We’ve provided Price & Compare tables on our Product pages. These pages also include information on finishing and other details you’ll need to know when you are ordering.
Pricing is shown when you’re setting up your print. But visit the product links in the main menu for specific pricing of both set sizes.

Yes. Once we have checked your photo for quality, we will set up your order and send you a real-time screenshot. You must approve the digital proof before we place the order. We request that you approve the proof within 24-hours of receipt. Since you have paid for your print in advance, any delay in the approval process creates a delay for us and our ability to deliver your artwork in a timely manner.
How can I avoid having a cropped image?
Instant Print Customers: It will be up to you to select a print size that compliments your image’s current aspect ratio. If your image file does not quite match those dimensions it will be cropped to accommodate the print size selected. Be sure you pay attention to the real-time screenshot proof. If any part of it looks cropped then you may need to choose a different size or have us adjust the cropping which may result in an additional service fee.
Concierge Customers: All of the elements of your image and the desired outcome are handled between you and our team. If cropping is not desired, you will be informed of other options and we will proceed based on your preferences.
How long will it take to produce my print?

Oftentimes we are able to accommodate rush production and will do so if possible.
Can you send me a test print?
Test prints (also called proofs) are not standard unless you are placing an offline order in which we are producing a large run (1000 copies or more), but if color matching is a concern, we recommend that you order a test print using the smallest size canvas or fine art paper to test the colors.
You may also invest in our Concierge Printing service at $70.
This gives you a dedicated print specialist whose job is to review and confirm the production of your print. Here’s what we do for you.
- File Review - We ensure all the bases are covered from image resolution to color settings.
- Print Composition – Make sure the size selected is optimal for the file. Your print specialist will make corrections to cropping or the orientation for you to review if it appears it will be beneficial or prevent the loss of certain elements within the print.
- Color Correction – Our color correction service analyzes your photo and optimizes the tones to achieve the correct contrast and saturation. This ensures that the result is as close to perfect as possible when printed on the media (canvas or fine art paper) of your choice.
How do I get started?
The first step is to digitize your artwork or photography. Then it is as easy as uploading your image to our website, setting size, preferences, and completing checkout.
With our newest service, we can also convert your smartphone photos into a high-quality 300 dpi image suitable for fine art printing. You may choose this Add-On service when checking out. Note: Your order will go into production once we have converted the image. Allow 2-3 business days for this service. In addition to your print, we’ll also send you the high-resolution .jpg of your image.
Can I order very small prints?
We generally print 8×8 or larger however in some cases you can select custom size options that are smaller. If a small size is not available to you a couple of solutions can be applied to get around this. One option is to have us tile multiple small prints onto a larger sheet. Another option is to have us create a margin around your image that will increase its print size to equal 8 inches. You can then remove the excess margin when receiving your prints.
We’re happy to provide you with a quote should you find any of the options shown above meet your needs.
Can I make changes to my order?
If you have not completed checkout, you certainly can. Or, if you have completed checkout but have not approved your proof, we can make adjustments before ordering. There may be a charge for adjustments after we’ve supplied the proof, and we will let you know what the fee if any is. If adjustments are made, a new proof will be sent.

Once the proof is approved and the order is submitted, to our printer, we are unable to make changes to images, or other products.

Add as many prints to your order as you would like. You can increase quantities within your shopping cart once a print has been added. You can also format multiple images for print within an order, by creating a new order and adding it to the shopping cart. We will then have them shipped together.
What is the largest size print I can order?
Size availability is related to the style of print being ordered. It is best to review the Price & Compare tables on each of our Fine Art Print pages to see what options are available.
